Incorporated in 1929 as the Bombay Suburban Electric Supply Limited, the Company's initial task was to distribute electricity in the suburbs of Mumbai. From about 1000 consumers in 1929, to over 2 million consumers with an annual consumption of 6 billion units, REL's Supply network covers a population of 9.0 million and an area of about 384 sq. kilometers within the city of Mumbai.

Reliance Energy Ltd. has established 4002 distribution sub-stations, 3114 km of high tension (HT), 3116 kms of low tension (LT) cable and 2538 kms of streetlight cable. The company has an installed distribution transformer capacity of about 2874 MVA. During the last five years (2001-2006) the installed capacity of power transformers has increased from 1632 MVA to 2022 MVA. The present maximum demand for the area is around 1331 MVA. The ratio of installed capacity to maximum demand is 1.52. The ratio of distribution transformer capacity to the maximum demand has gone up from 1.96 to 2.16.

Reliance Energy Ltd's continual efforts to achieve higher levels of efficiency have resulted in a reduction in the distribution losses to 12.01%, which is among the lowest in the country.
