Dahanu Thermal Power Station
 |
Dahanu TPS is a 500 MW (2 X 250 MW) coal based thermal power station situated approximately 120 kms. from Mumbai on the western seacoast.
The Dahanu Thermal Power Plant is a state of the art power generation facility. This is first 250 MW coal fired thermal plant in the country which was commissioned in 1995 and has been constantly upgraded to maintain its technological edge. DTPS has been recognized as the best performing coal based power station in the country for its Operational excellence, Environment Management, Quality, Safety & Corporate Social responsibility.
DTPS has adopted modern power station O&M practices to make the power station highly reliable, efficient through system approach in all its activities. Integrated Management System (IMS) for Quality, Environment and Occupational Health & Safety, in addition to SA 8000 and ISO 27001 systems. Focussed operations management and performance monitoring system, Condition based maintenance management with the help of latest condition monitoring systems, Reliability centred maintenance philosophy, Spares Management System are the key initiatives. DTPS is the first power plant in the country to integrate all its business processes through ERP (Enterprise Resources Planning) system.
Plant has established a comprehensive fuel management system. Keeping in view of logistics, economics, O&M challenges and environmental issues, DTPS has gone in for imported coal blending with washed Indian coal.
DTPS has over the period developed competency in measurement, monitoring, evaluation and control of various parameters related to plant performance and also implemented numerous improvement programs through Quality improvement programs (QIP), Environmental management programs (EMP) and Safety improvement plans (SIP).
The plant undertook Six Sigma initiative, which has directly resulted in considerable improvement in Key Performance indicators i.e. achieving best heat rate, lowest Specific Oil consumption, highest Plant load factor and plant availability along with improved Environmental performance.
Employees are trained to use techniques like Five-S, FMEA, COPQ, Pareto chart, control chart and 8-D analysis etc which have resulted in improved performance.

DTPS has over the years continuously improved its environmental performance through concerted efforts and today it is considered as one of the best and cleanest power station in the country. A green coverage with 10 million mangroves on the coast line and about 6.0 million forest, fruit bearing & ornamental plants in the power plant & its township premises has come up as a result of sustained, concerted effort to be in harmony with the environment. Various ecological and environmental factors have been given adequate care with round the clock measurement, monitoring & control. Plant maintains various environment related parameters well below the norms laid down by the statutory bodies. Some of the Environment Management Programs like Installation of Flue gas Desulphurization plant, effective utilization of fly ash are the unique for this coal based power plant.
DTPS has well defined business continuity plan, risk assessment and mitigation plan. The plant is certified for OSHAS 18001. Risk Assessment and Evaluation is carried out through Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment process. The plant is being timely evaluated by independent Safety Auditors of National & International repute. The plant has been awarded by Govt. of India, State & National Safety Council of India for its “longest accident free working days and lowest accident frequency rate”.
The disaster management plan is implemented since beginning and has earmarked detailed responsibility and action plan in case of emergencies and calamities like earthquake, flood, fire and terrorist attack etc. The mock drills are carried out regularly which are monitored. The power station is well protected with Close Circuit Television system and Fire Protection System along with latest Safety Controls and interlocking Work Permit Systems.
As a responsible corporate citizen DTPS has undertaken various social responsibility initiatives in and around Dahanu Taluka, a predominantly tribal area. These are focused activities in the field of Education, Health and other community needs. Regular and permanent projects are carried out jointly with non-governmental organizations (NGO). Regular projects carried out are educational aid to students, merit scholarships and Best Teacher awards, etc. Under health service projects activities like eye cataract operations, eradication of malnutrition amongst children, health checkup camps, Polio immunization, etc. are being carried out. Recently company has taken a project “Drinking water to all’ in Dahanu Taluka, which has created drinking water facility to
the Villages by providing about 500 Bore well with hand pumps , check dams under rain water harvesting program to increase the ground water table. Infrastructure projects like construction of school, college buildings & repair of hostel building for the students are some of the initiatives undertaken during the recent past. About 750 mtrs of anti sea erosion bund is one the unique projects carried out under social responsibility initiatives.
DTPS has been recognized as a model power station in the country. The plant has received numerous awards & recognitions at National and International forums, in its journey towards Excellence.
Plant Performance 2008-2009:
- DTPS has once again secured top position in the power sector by performing well above the set targets.
- During the year, Dahanu Thermal Power Station generated 4423 million units as against CEA’s target of 4200 million units, at an average Plant Load Factor (PLF) of 100.99 per cent.
- The plant has gradually progressed from a PLF of 90.53% in the year 2002-03 to current level of 100.99%, as against the CERC norm of 80% in the last 5 years.
- The station has also achieved a plant availability of 96.31 % during the year.
