Introduction
Reliance Energy Limited has installed a state of the art Integrated Control system called the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) for its Transmission and Distribution network. REL has laid down 200 kms of 24 F ADSS Optical Fiber Cable in the licensed area connecting 54, 33/22/11 KV receiving stations and 3 Nos of 220 kV bulk receiving stations. These are used as communication media for the Transmission and Distribution system. The newly commissioned integrated SCADA contains enhanced version for better control and monitoring of Generation, Transmission and Distribution system.
System Description
Three main components form the SCADA System.
-
RTU:
Remote Terminal Units
RTUs are microprocessor based intelligent devices that are used as an electrical interface between the switchgear and the control centre.
These instruments collect the entire analog and digital data like current, voltages, status etc and make them available for processing and transferring to the control centre. By using the analog data, the RTUs calculate the power as well as energy parameters.
-
Communication
For Distribution system the optical communication system works as a transport system to transfer data between the receiving stations and the control centers whereas for Transmission stations and Generation (Dahanu) Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) cable is mode of communication.
-
Control
Centre Equipment
The control centre equipment consists Communicators, Administrators, MMI and other supporting equipments. The Front End Processors (FEP) at Control Centers collects data from the various RTUs located at receiving stations. The received data is then processed and made available to different servers over a dual redundant LAN system.
The distributed architecture of the System sends the data to different servers with control center operation functionality in MMI, which provides real time information related to the receiving stations.
Hierarchy of operation
The REL distribution area is divided into five Divisions. Three levels of operations are implemented for effective functionality. Each of the receiving stations is controlled from the Integrated control centre located at Aarey. Additionally, a Master Control Center (MCC) also designed in view of redundancy for monitoring and control of all receiving stations.
Benefits
Centrally located at Aarey, Integrated SCADA for Generation, Transmission and Distribution enables better control over entire Power System for REL Mumbai Network.
A Step ahead in modern technology, this integrated SCADA is being automated down the line to control and monitor the 11kV/ 400 Volts Substations in REL Network through Distribution Management System (DMS).
Integration with Geographical Information System (GIS) and Outage Management System (OMS) is additional benefit to be achieved in coming years.
The SCADA system is a real time operating system. It closely monitors the distribution system and its behavior. All abnormalities within the distribution system are immediately reported to Control centers at Aarey. The SCADA operation team takes the necessary action and thus reduces the down time of the network.
All the data of the receiving station are logged at an interval of 15 Minutes intervals. The logged data provides trends of the load flow. The SCADA system operation team manages the load flow of the network efficiently and this minimizes the causes for forced outages. Historical data is utilized for planning the voltage profile, power factor improvement etc.
