Goa Power Station is located about five kilometers from the Dabolim Airport, at Zuarinagar, Goa. The power plant is equipped with state of the art Gas Turbine (32 MW), Steam Turbine (16 MW) both with Mark V control system and Heat Recovery Steam Generators. Majority of the equipment and control systems are sourced from renowned technology providers across the world including General Electric and Siemens and manufacturers like BHEL and Foxboro. It is a fully automated plant with integrated nature of operation and maintenance philosophy.
Over a period of last 7 years of successful operation Goa Power Station has grown from a generating company to a full fledged distribution and utility enterprise. Initially major part of the electricity generated from the Plant was being supplied to the Government of Goa grid. Goa Power Station, REL was also allowed to supply power directly through its dedicated network of underground Distribution system to private industries in Goa including Mormugao Port Trust and Meta Strips Limited. Over the last five years it has developed additional customer base in Goa and today almost 60% of the generation goes directly to major industrial consumers. The same quantum of power is reduced from the grid supply. It has also set up reliable underground cable distribution network system and sub stations in Verna, Kundaim and Madkaim Industrial Estate to supply quality and reliable power to industries. Consumers include major Indian and multinational companies like, Coca Cola, Finolex, D-Link, Abbot Laboratories, Cipla, Birla Optics, Colorcon, Universal Cables, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, Lupin Pharma, Pentair, Betts India, Microlabs, Syngenta (Novartis), Procter & Gamble, Hindustan Lever, Ciba Specialties Chemicals, Aventis, Wyeth Lederle, Essel Propack, Ratiopharma, etc., who are all availing the benefits of quality and reliable power supply from the Goa Power Station. In the process it has been acknowledged as the preferred electricity supplier and technological solution provider in Goa.
Today Goa Power Station currently has industrial consumer base of about 90, besides supplying power to GoG.To maintain the high reliability of generation your company periodically undertakes major overhauling of the plant by replacing the critical components of the Gas Turbine thereby increasing the component life.
Generation of Electricity
Goa Power Station
The CCPP of the company at Goa generated 350 MU during 2005-06 and have been consistently maintaining high Plant Load Factor. The station achieved plant availability of over 97%. Continuous efforts are made towards energy conservation by innovative methods to reduce the in house power consumption.
Transmission and Distribution of Electricity
Goa Power Station has developed their own underground distribution system network in Murmogoa Port, Verna and Kundaim Insuatrial Estate, Madkaim and Corlim. The backbone network consists of 33 KV loop circuit line to feed any section of the network from two directions. Within the industrial estates of Verna and Kundaim 3 nos. of 33/11 KV substations each having 1 x 6.3 MVA Transformers are being set up to cater to 11 KV consumers loads as well. 11KV/LT 500 KVA Transformer centres are also in place to feed LT consumers within the industrial estates. The redundancy and built in adequacy of system design ensure quality, reliable and uninterrupted power supply to all the consumers.
Modernization and strengthening of the system
Survey and data collection has been completed as a step towards implementation of GIS for plant and distribution system.
Customer Care
The Goa power station supplies power through its dedicated underground cable network system. Goa power station is able to attract all the consumers due its superior quality of supply, uniform voltage profile and very few unscheduled outage. Also it has positioned itself as a total power quality solution provider and not as a mere utility. This includes providing solution to consumers within their premises so as to make best use of the supply. Energy audit, internal electrical distribution system improvement, etc., are provided as value added services. High consumption consumers are given rebates based on the load utilization pattern.
An annual exercise is carried out regularly within the consumer's premises for identifying proper usage of power, including checking of phase imbalance, Harmonics etc. in the consumer's system with the help of sophisticated Power Quality Analyser.
Each Industrial Estate has a Resident Engineer who normally attends to consumer needs. Consumers can also access the Sub-stations or directly the Plant Control Room over telephone in case of any emergency.
Outlook
Goa is fast becoming a destination for clean industries particularly pharma industries who need quality and reliable power supply. The Company will endeavor to consolidate its operation by catering to the additional load growth. GPS has proposed for installation of an imported coal (low ash-ultra low sulphur) fired AFBC Boiler in the existing plant to reduce generation cost. This will use Advanced Coal Technology to minimize any impact on the environment. Formal application has been submitted to HPCC (High Powered Co ordination Committee), Govt. of Goa for the approval. The proposal is under consideration of the HPCC.
Safety
Goa Power Station attaches utmost importance to safety standards. Steps are regularly taken to ensure safety of equipments, and personnel. GPS conducts safety audits external and internal, emergency preparedness and response to mock drill and disaster management. Safety committee identifies safety measures to be adopted to continually improve safe working procedures. GPS also has an electronic online system in place wherein unsafe observations can be brought to the notice of safety committee by way of "Unsafe Observation Report".
The Plant has maintained 'Zero Reportable Accident' record from the inception.
Inspectorate of Factories and Boilers in Goa with Green Triangle Society (NGO) has started a State Safety Award for the best performing Industry in different categories. The criteria of selection not only included accident records but also legal compliances environmental and occupational health parameters. Under this, for its excellent safety standards and records the Goa Power Station was adjudged FIRST and received State Safety Award in the category of 'Shipbuilding, Electrical and Electronic industries.
Environment
The company is a responsible, environmentally conscious company committed to continually improve its Environment Management System and produce quality power in an efficient and eco-friendly manner. In August 2000, the plant was awarded the ISO 14001 certificate for environment management by BVQI and continues to be certified. The plant is actively involved in afforestation with plantation work in & around plant premises and at allocated locations by forest department.
During 2005-06 Goa Power Station successfully achieved the recertification by BVQI for ISO 14001 - 2004 (New Standard) towards Environment Management System.
